Bird of the Year 2006 - Little Owl  

Little Owl (Athene noctua) [TCHOTI in georgian language] is uncommon (in central areas) to common (in eastern and south -eastern parts of country) year-round resident. More common at the Iori Table-land, Karthli Plain, Shiraki, Eldari and Udabno semideserts, Gardabani Lowland and in some areas of Mtkvari River valley. The western bound of its breeding range remains uncertain. Prefers dry open habitats with ravines, precipices and rock outcrops. Little Owl often is settling in different buildings and in ruins.
At present Georgian population estimated several thousands breeding pairs (3500 - 4000 in the middle of 1990''s). During the last twenty-five years, no alarming trends have been detected.
